Indonesia‘s exporters denounce quota mismanagement
Agencies -

Indonesia’s clothing exporters are again protesting against possible mistakes in management of textile quotas. The new quota allocation system was also strongly criticised, not only by exporters but also by various lawmakers. Although it made substantial progress towards economic modernisation, Indonesia is still confronted with bureaucracy and corruption, according to independent observers.

Domestic legislators and exporters warned the Indonesian industry and trade ministry about a possible surge in illegal transshipments after exports of certain products to the US suddenly surged in less than two months. Quota for US Category 347 (women and girl cotton trousers, slacks and shorts) was already 70 per cent fulfilled by mid May compared with a utilisation ratio of 25 per cent at the same period last year. US official data confirm that apparel imports from Indonesia for category 347 were up 82 per cent in volume terms in the first quarter.

EDIT
Body for tech textiles
The recent proposal to set up an expert committee on technical textiles is certainly an apt move. The ministry should not lose any time in forming this body which will ensure speedy implementation of the process.
