Improving
quality without additional cost was stressed by experts who participated
in the four-day national convention Six Sigma Towards Zero
defect. The programme was organised by the Indian Statistical
Institute (ISI) to evaluate the means and ways of implementing six
sigma approach in Indian industries. Six Sigma approach aims at
reducing variation, achieving targets, cutting cost and preventing
defects to enhance quality and customer satisfaction.
Industries
should increase quality without increasing cost. And this can be
achieved by developing human resources, said Mr K M Date,
head, statistical quality control and operational research (SQC
& OR) division from ISI, Pune.
ISI
is carrying out statistical techniques extensively in industries
for the improvement of quality, reduction of waste and optimum utilisation
of resources. The SQC and OR wing of ISI has 10 divisions across
the country. Brain storming sessions, case studies, practical problems
were discussed for effective implementation in industries.
