PDEXCIL, NCUTE seminar on modernisation

A one-day seminar was jointly organised by the Powerloom Development and export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL), and the Nodal Centre for Upgradation of Textile Education (NCUTE), ministry of textiles, on ‘Modernisation of the Powerloom Sector’ at Erode recently.

The objective of the seminar was to create awareness about the need for modernisation and prepare the industry to face the challenges of globalisation. The emphasis was on providing knowledge and to give impetus to modernisation, adopting new technologies, professionalising the work culture and complying to international quality standards. The PDEXCIL-NCUTE seminar and workshop at Erode was the second in the series, the first one was organised at Bhiwandi, Maharashtra.

In his presidential address, Cav M S Mathivanan, past chairman and convenor of the Development and Extension Panel, PDEXCIL outlined the need for modernisation and requested more than 250 young entrepreneurs assembled to keep pace and adapt to the changing requirements, keeping in mind the post-MFA era, due to commence from January 2005. Prof A K Gupta, coordinator, NCUTE in his address, called upon the industry to focus on the technical requirements of the sector. He stated that human resource development was the vital need of the powerloom sector. He assured that NCUTE would organise follow-up seminars for the Erode cluster of powerlooms, if required. Mr M Senthil Kumar, vice chairman (SR), PDEXCIL, emphasised the importance of human resources and skill development. He outlined the problems of the powerloom industry and requested the concerned authorities to take corrective measures for the overall development of the powerloom industry. A number of papers were presented at the seminar. Mr Subba Rao, former technical director, Binny Ltd, presented a paper on ‘Raw material, quality awareness and inventory control’. He advised that quality is the keyword and it is high time the industry pay attention to the issues relating to quality, for achieving international standards. Mr Shankaranama Shivayam, senior scientific officer, SITRA powerloom service centre, Komarapalayam in his lecture enumerated the advantages of the shuttleless looms in comparison to the shuttle looms, to achieve high quality levels, at competitive costs. Prof S Rajagopalan, head of textile technology dept, SSM Engineering College, Komarapalayam in his lecture on ‘Advances in weaving technology and looms’, pointed out the developments in auto looms, while outlining inadequacies of plain powerlooms.

Mr Sandeep Jain IRS, executive director, PDEXCIL, called for enhancing the scope for modernisation not only in the mechanical, but also in the technical field. He urged for improvement in human resource development, financial management, procurement of appropriate raw materials, maintenance of quality standards and marketing of products with an innovative approach. He said PDEXCIL had assumed the role of a service provider to the industry by way of organising visits of various delegations.
