RMG traders to go on token strike on March 15

Agencies - Indore

The readymade garment traders in the counry would go on a token strike on March 15 in protest against the decision to levy 10 per cent excise duty on the readymade garment industry.

Describing the decision as ‘unfortunate and against the interest of the industry and its employees’, the Indore Readymade Garment Traders Association president Mr Sanghapriya Dosi told reporters that it would lead to the closure of the industry, rendering lakhs of people jobless.

He said readymade garment traders in Indore, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Raipur, Delhi, Ludhiana, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Bellari and Madurai would go on the token strike. The traders would resort to an indefinite strike from April 1 if their demand of roll-back of the excise duty was not conceded, Mr Dosi said.

The budget also decided to waive off the provision of not including units with a turnover of Rs 1 crore under the excise regime which has affected a large number of people engaged in the readymade garment business, he added.
