GOM discusses proposed legislation on contract labour

PTI - New Delhi

A group of ministers (GOM) on labour reforms discussed issues relating to enactment of a proposed legislation on contract labour, which seeks increased responsibility of contractor and safety net for contractual labour.

The meeting was chaired by the Planning Commission deputy chairman Mr K C Pant. Sources said the new law proposes further simplification of the process of registration of contractors. However, issues of insurance and retrenchment for the workers have not been changed and responsibility of labour welfare have been kept with the contractor. The draft has been modified in view of recommendations made by the GOM and observations of the law ministry based on the meeting of group of secretaries. The meeting was attended by other members of the group including small scale industry minister Mr C P Thakur, commerce minister Mr Arun Jaitley and labour minister Mr Sahib Singh Verma.
