Pak should accord MFN status to India

Agencies - New Delhi

As part of confidence-building measures, Pakistan should reciprocate and accord India MFN status to move in the direction of improving bilateral economic and trade ties, the minister of state for external affairs Mr Digvijay Singh said.

“This (according MFN status) is a basic step in economic relations,” Mr Singh stated. The Minister said the two countries would have to hold discussions on the nature of a structured agenda before considering a political summit. He, however, made it clear that there was hesitancy on India’s part for the prime minister Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee to hold talks with his Pakistani counterpart Mr Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali. “Prime Minister Jamali is the executive head in Pakistan,” he said to press his point.

Better days ahead
The recent rally in textile counters was overdue for some time now. The domestic industry is certainly turning around, if one goes by the financial performance of textile companies for the fiscal ended March 2003.
