The
new Union textiles minister, Mr Shahanawaz Hussain, has asked apparel
exporters to draw up an action plan, which would help them to face
the challenges post-2004.
Speaking
at a felicitation programmed hosted by the Confederation of Indian
Apparel Exporters (CIAE) in Mumbai, recently, the minister said
that he realised the challenges he must face as the textiles minister.
He said he planned to have detailed meetings with each sector of
the industry, including apparel sector, and would try and understand
their problems and seek their views before making new policy announcements.
Mr
Hussain said that he wanted to increase the world share of the Indian
apparel industry from 2.5 per cent, to at least five per cent in
the near future. He has also consented to inaugurate the Indian
Apparel Contract, being organised by the CIAE, in collaboration
with CIDEX, a joint venture between the German exhibition giants
Messe Dusseldorf and Koln Messe. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Amit
Goyal, president, CIAE, said, India today is increasingly
being looked upto as a major supplier of quality fashion apparels
and Indian apparels are now being well appreciated by most of the
international brands, which is evident from the fact that all major
brands or stores like GAP, Wal-Mart, J C Penny, etc have now opened
their own offices here for sourcing quality apparels.
