PTI
- Bangalore
A
leading defence lab here is taking up a project to develop Smart
Vest under the National Programme for Smart Materials (NPSM)
in the next two years.
The
smart vest will help in monitoring the health of a person. It will
have micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) and other smart systems
to diagnose various health parameters, NPSM programme director
Dr A R Upadhyay told reporters here.
NPSM
is sanctioning the project to city-based Defence Bio-Engineering
and Electromedical Laboratory (DEBEL) for developing the vest for
both armed forces and civilian use. The project mandate is
for two years, Dr Upadhyay, who is also project director (Air
Frame) for the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), said.
NPSM,
launched in 2000, has over 30 major projects, including several
in bio-medical applications like non-intrusive health monitoring
system for cardiac diseases. A defence lab in Chandigarh is already
working on a TB diagnostic kit, Dr Upadhyay said, adding devices
for health monitoring of aircraft structures was also being developed.
A
device to monitor LCA type of existing aircraft, which has large
amount of composites is being developed, he
said.
