First Lycra MTV Style Awards in Mumbai

A celebration of style, an occasion to applaud hot
and new talent. MTV and Lycra are turning on their style searchlights to seek
out today’s czars of style and fashion at the first ever Lycra MTV Style
Awards.
To be held at the Jamshed Bhabha Auditorium in Mumbai,
on October 18, 2003, Lycra MTV Style Awards will bestow 19 awards across 13
categories (see box). The awards will recognise style, fashion and talent across
different spheres. The Lycra MTV Style Awards is being organised in association
with Yamaha, Hyundia and LG GDMA.
The three categories that will be awarded are Popular,
Technical and Honors. The popular awards will recognise the most stylish people
in the fields of music, television, films and sports while the technical awards
will acknowledge people from the fashion industry including models, designers
and fashion photographers. The honors awards will recognise people in the field
of business and politics.
A celebrated expert panel chaired by Shobhaa De will
include Karan Johar, Feroz Gujral, Malaika Arora, Nafisa Ali, Navjot Singh Siddhu,
Pooja Bhatt, Prasad Bidappa, Priya Paul and Wendell Rodricks. While the concept
of style is elusive and a challenge to define, it is yet obvious. The panelists’
will select nominees in the eight popular categories for being dynamic, stylish
and contemporary. Said Alex Kuruvilla, managing director, MTV Networks India,
“Style is not the label on the hip-pocket of your jeans, it’s a state
of mind. MTV, over the years, has become such an integral part of mainstream
style across the globe, we felt it was time that we celebrated the ones who
set the trends in our own backyard”.
“The awards will honour celebrities and individuals
for their outstanding sense of style. With the participation of fashion, entertainment,
sport and music superstars, Lycra is as ever committed to making this the most
happening fashion and lifestyle event in India,” states Satish Khurana,
country head, DuPont Textiles and Interiors (DTI), owners of the Lycra brand.
The nominees of the popular categories, once selected,
will be aired on MTV. Viewers will be invited to vote for their most stylish
person in each category by logging onto mtvindia.com or drop their votes in
ballot boxes placed at ‘MTV Hangouts’ across the country and Lycra
Preferred Partner outlets. The winners in the technical and honors categories
will be decided by the panelists.
The awards night will feature live music performance
by India’s hottest acts and ramp walks that will showcase the lines of
saluted designers. Making a statement with their designs at the Lycra MTV Style
Awards will be fashion’s brightest stars: Sabyasachi Mukherji, Malini Ramani,
Manish Malhotra and Anand Jon. Their exclusive collections created specially
for the event, will be set to live music composed by Trilok Gurtu, KK and Midival
Punditz, Salim - Suleiman and DJ Aqeel. The opening act at the Lycra MTV Style
Awards are Shankar - Ehsan - Loy while the international act - C21 will also
perform.

Lycra MTV Style Awards promises to become the most happening event in Mumbai’s
couture calendar. The Lycra MTV Style Awards will be promoted through a campaign
that will run across print, outdoor, on-air and online via mtvindia.com. Exclusive
pre-show parties in Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai will usher the Lycra MTV Style
Awards.
