India’s textile imports record 8.06% growth during Apr-Feb, 02-03

India’s imports of textile and clothing looks to have been tempered, clocking a growth of just over eight per cent during April-February, 2002-03, as per the DGCIS figures.

Total imports in value terms during the period under consideration amounted to Rs 7238.18 crore, a growth of 8.06 per cent, over imports worth Rs 6698.34 crore during the same period of 2001-02.

An itemwise analysis reveals that imports of fibres had a negative growth of 12.82 per cent in value terms, to Rs 3015.24 crore. Major items of import in this category were raw silk with exports of Rs 598.21 crore, a growth of 8.68 per cent. Imports of raw wool at Rs 754.83 crore recorded a growth of 30.63 per cent. Raw cotton imports during the period were down 41.66 per cent to Rs 1124.69 crore. Imports of synthetic tow (Rs 124.82 crore) and manmade staple fibre (Rs 207.79 crore) grew by 31.52 per cent and 29.87 per cent respectively.

Yarn imports grew by 30.60 per cent during the period to Rs 1373.82 crore. Major items here are silk yarn, which recorded a growth of 30.40 per cent to Rs 84 crore, woollen yarn at Rs 23.63 crore, a growth of 153.28 per cent. Cotton yarn imports grew by 53.19 per cent to Rs 47.35 crore, cotton sewing thread imports were down 18.67 per cent to Rs 0.95 crore. Imports of jute and other vegetable textile yarns at Rs 4.62 crore grew by 15.84 per cent. Imports of 100 per cent non-cotton yarn at 96.81 crore recorded a growth of 21.63 per cent.

Imports of fabrics registered a growth of a much as 69.67 per cent to Rs 1614.81 crore during the period under consideration. Silk fabric imports stood at Rs 177.69 crore, a growth of 112.18 per cent. Woollen fabric imports at Rs 81.01 crore, recorded a growth of as much as 792.33 per cent, over imports during the same period of the previous year. Woven cotton fabric imports at Rs 335.19 crore, grew by 88.23 per cent. Woven flax fabrics grew by 123.70 per cent, to 115.89 crore. Manmade woven fabric imports during the period stood at Rs 516.16 crore, a growth of 66.48 per cent.

Imports of readymade garments, made-ups witnessed a negative growth of 15.21 per cent at Rs 399.50 crore. Imports of apparel and clothing were down 40.80 per cent to Rs 99.10 crore. Other textile items such as textiles for industrial use, nonwovens, etc, grew by 9.17 per cent to Rs 834.81 crore.

The new textile minister has evinced keen interest in rejuvenating the jute sector which has so far been not successful in drawing the attention of the policy makers.
