No wrinkles, no yellowing: Paradox turns possible

Resil’s Value Plus System for white shirts explodes a myth - that white shades and wrinkle-free finishing are incompatible. Additionally, the Value Plus System guarantees a soft, smooth finish and easy application.

Finishing of garments for a durable ‘wrinkle-free’ effect was first achieved in 1987 and it was a revolution of the time. Today, such finishes are much sought after, and no high flying brand is complete without a wrinkle-free range in its showcase.

Wrinkle-free, not problem-free

Wrinkle-free finishing, nevertheless, has posed a problem for experts in textile finishing from its initial days. The widely used chemical DiMethylol DiHydroxy Ethylene Urea (DMDHEU) has a tendency to lend a yellow colour to white garments, especially white shirts. Excessive formaldehyde vapours as well as volatile acid liberated during DMDHEU application tends to change shades, particularly by imparting a yellow effect on white and other light coloured garments. Moreover, these garments lose a good amount of their initial strength, reducing the durability of treated textiles. The desired properties of a soft handle and brilliant lustre are also lost.

A sparkling, creaseless breakthrough

A softener with no limitations
From Resil’s research and innovation lab comes a new softener - Resil Ramido. This is a highly versatile softner with added benefits over organic softeners, and without the associated drawbacks of foaming, odour, etc.

Resil Ramido is a fatty amide that is suitable as a hand modifier on all types of substances. It imparts a bulky non-soapy handle when compared to a conventional organic softener with much less foam during the process. The outstanding feature of Resil Ramido is its compatibility with other additives such as silicones without causing shade variation or yellowing. The odour that is so typical of organic softeners is also absent, making its application a pleasant experience.

Ramido’s performance on cellulosic, synthetic and protein-containing substrates is found to be exceptional; imparting superior surface smoothness and volume to the substrate. It is safe on dark shades as well. Resil Ramido has been specially recommended in yarn finishing. An excellent lubricant, it is effective at very low dosage without compromising on important parameters like tensile strength.

A wrinkle-free finish on shirts without side-effects remained a challenge, until Resil’s research team concentrated its efforts towards perfecting this popular yet incomplete finish.

This resulted in a breakthrough development, a product that achieves a lasting wrinkle-free finish while retaining whiteness. Resil Value Plus System, the first comprehensive value package for a wrinkle-free finish on white garments. At the heart of the Value Plus Package is Resil CLS - a near-perfect improvement on the conventional DMDHEU cross-linking system. A modified Glyoxal based, ultra-low formaldehyde linking system, it assures all the benefits of the traditional method, while adding to the handle and shelflife of the garment.

India’s first wrinkle-free shirts

Till now, marketers in India could only offer imported wrinkle-free shirts, since there was no effective indigenous formula without the associated problems. With the introduction of the Value Plus System, however, Indian brands now have the opportunity to provide a world-class, homegrown wrinkle free product.

A comprehensive, feature-packed solution

The Value Plus System is distinguished by three key features:

  • Very low formaldehyde content
  • No loss of tear strength
  • Easy application.

Moreover, it is a single, comprehensive solution that addresses all aspects of wrinkle-free finishing: Handle, lustre, durability and colour fastness. These multiple capabilities stem from Resil CLS’ being an all-in-one resin, which offers better functionality than a conventional resin in normal process conditions. Resil CLS does away with the need for an acidic catalyst, polyethylene and even silicones at times; being a single component, it makes for easier handling.

Compared to the DMDHEU system, Resil CLS ensures remarkably low loss of strength, enabling an ideal application on lightweight garments, shirts, shirting fabrics and knits. Its negligible formaldehyde content also makes it an efficient master solution for pastels and whites.

The following are some of Resil CLS’ benefits over the DMDHEU system:

  • Soft, smooth handle with natural comfort and breathability. Does not make the fibre brittle and stiff, hence, handle is not harsh.
  • Good lustre, shade retention and brilliance in the absence of acid-liberating catalysts and yellowing agents.
  • Improved physical properties. Very low tear, tensile and bursting strength loss combined with low frosting and crease edge abrasion.
  • High compatibility with accessories like zippers since acid liberation is absent.
  • Easy application. Being an all-in-one component, error-causing variables become redundant. Handling becomes a smooth affair.
  • Long shelf life. Unlike other pre-catalysed products that have a lower shelflife of 3-6 months, Resil CLS can be preserved for a year.

Silicon research

Silicones, as a class of synthetic polymers, are extremely versatile with over 4000 applications ranging from insulators and aerospace applications to sealants and cosmetics. Resil is one of the few companies in the world to dedicate itself to silicone research focused solely on Textile Applications. In the textile applications segment, Silicones can be modified with structural and functional modification in the base product to offer a myriad range of finishes. Resil’s new polymerization plant allows us to design siloxane molecules at the base polymer stage itself. Result: A range of specialty silicone plymers that are designed for specific substrates.

Resil offers truly engineered products customised to requirements. Distinctive fabric finish options are possible by the differentiated use of silicones.

Speciality silicone formulations for :

  • Polyester finishing
  • Nylon microfilament fabric finishing
  • Acrylic yarn and fabric finishing
  • Antimicrobial finishing
  • Wrinkle free finishing on garments
  • Crease resistant finishing on fabrics.

ARC enables customers to reach out to the latest developments in garments and finishing. Resil’s presence in key world markets and its alliances with leading global players ensure a continuous inflow of information.

ARC will also serve as a conduit for guidance from specialists in the various aspects of textile- and garment-processing. Contact sessions and demonstrations will be conducted regularly, to provide an ongoing interface between the customer and the technologist Resil’s Application Research Centre excels in :

  • Developing new finishes
  • Customised finishes, combining diverse properties
  • Finishes to match references
  • Processes to obtain specific finishes
  • Evaluating finishes.

Production of appropriate machinery
Though the domestic textile engineering sector has made some recovery in the recent months, there is still a long way to go
