J & K minister urges adoption of latest techniques in silk industry

PTI - Srinagar

Stressing on the need to revive the glory of Jammu and Kashmir silk industry, state agriculture minister, Mr Abdul Aziz Zargar has called for adopting latest technologies and research in the sector to meet the challenges posed by Chinese silk in the world market. “We need to adopt latest technologies and research in silk sector so that Jammu and Kashmir could compete the world market as the import of Chinese silk has posed a great challenge to this industry,” Mr Zargar said during inspection of basic seed station at Mirgund, about 22 kms from here, recently.

He asked the concerned officials and field agencies to gear up men and machinery to revive the pristine glory of the traditional silk industry in the state. The coalition government has decided to continue the practice of providing incentive for mulberry cultivation in order to popularise cocoon production in the state which has increased in Kashmir division to about 2.45 lakh kgs as against just 1.19 lakh kgs in 1995-96, he said.

About 14,000 cocoon rearers would be provided incentives of Rs 35 lakh for mulberry cultivation this year to promote cocoon production, he said, adding Central Silk Board has provided three crore during the current year for the purpose.

Advocating for the association of local public representatives in the distribution system of incentives to cocoon rearers, he said the department should provide a list of beneficiaries to the mlas for this purpose.

Edit

Production of appropriate machinery
Though the domestic textile engineering sector has made some recovery in the recent months, there is still a long way to go
