WTO must benefit traditional industries, women
PTI - New Delhi
Trade liberalisation must benefit the women and weaker
sections in developing countries by expanding the market access of traditional
industries, the minister of state for commerce and industry Mr S B Mookherjee
said.
India believes that products which are gender
sensitive, that is products having greater involvement of women should be put
on a fast track for greater market access in WTO, Mr Mookherjee said here,
inaugurating a symposium on Trade, Globalisation and Gender organised by United
Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) here.
Traditional industries have often borne the brunt of
economic transition, he said. Trade liberalisation in gender sensitive products
should address non-trade barriers including trade defense measures like anti-dumping,
subsidies and safeguard actions.
Special dispensation such as peace clause against trade
defense measures in textile and clothing following the phase-out of multi-fibre
agreement would be of great benefit, he said.
Generating employment for women and better incomes
should be seen in public good, he said adding that this figured amongst the
key millennium development goals of the United Nations.
