The government has ruled out any ban on cotton exports to stabilise domestic prices as the commodity is being increasingly diverted to take advantage of soaring global prices.

Hike in import duty on cotton demanded
The Maharashtra minister for state for excise and NCP leader, Mr Anil Deshmukh has urged the Centre to hike import duty on cotton to curb its imports and to push procurement of local produce.

Textiles ministry for more sops in budget
The textiles ministry will press for more tax sops in the budget to enable modernisation of the obsolete industry to face the challenges arising with the dismantling of quotas by end 2004.
