CII seeks manufacturing policy in states

E-Tex Staff - Coimbatore

There should be more thrust on the manufacturing sector and each state should draft a manufacturing policy, said Mr K K M Kutty, chairman, CII, southern region. “A manufacturing policy is essential to address procedural issues, labour and power reforms. The policy can derive its crux from the industrial policy,” he said in a press conference.

CII was preparing a concept paper on the same, which would be released next year. Technology, human resources, infrastructure and SMEs were the strength of the southern region and developing a vibrant SME sector was the objective of CII. Towards this, CII is organising training programmes under the cluster development approach. CII has already intervened in the development of SMEs in Mohali and a similar model would be replicated in the southern clusters like Coimbatore and Cochin. A unit based approach would be undertaken to improve quality and reduce cost, Mr Kutty said.

Furthering growth and development of the textile industry in Coimbatore belt was one of the priorities of the CII and a study was underway, which would be released during December. The study is aimed at strategising the textile units of the southern region. It will focus on internal issues like cost, quality and external issues like VAT implementation, policy issues, central and state government issues.

Manufacturing costs
The cost of manufacturing has been a major concern for the domestic textile industry which is shortly entering into the post-MFA regime.
