Ciba Specialty Chemicals boosts competitiveness of dye production in Basel

  • CHF 15 million investment in automated production processes to raise cost effectiveness
  • Automation of production processes leads to a reduction of 150-200 jobs over a number of years, but no dismissals
  • Basel reinforced as center of excellence for introduction of new products due to its proximity to research and development.

Ciba Specialty Chemicals has decided to invest CHF 15 million in the production of textile dyes in Basel, Switzerland. The automation of product lines in the synthesis and standardization areas will optimize production processes and improve cost efficiency. In addition, the product portfolio is being streamlined. The investment project will be spread over a number of years. “This investment represents a long-term boost to the international competitiveness of the Basel production site,” explained Armin Meyer, Chairman and CEO of Ciba Specialty Chemicals. “The modernized and automated production facilities will increase our scope for new and innovative products and create attractive production capacity close to research and development, which can be utilized by all our segments. Moreover, this move secures a large number of attractive jobs in a modern production environment over the long term.”

As a result of the optimized production processes, 150 - 200 jobs in textile dye production at Basel will be reduced over the coming years. This reduction will be implemented through the normal retirement process, transfers and other forms of natural attrition. The project does not foresee any dismissals. Ciba Specialty Chemicals employs around 2,750 people in Basel-Stadt and over 4,000 in the whole of Switzerland.
