Customs department urges exporters to be tolerant

PTI - Kolkata

The customs department has urged local exporters to be more tolerant with revenue officials dealing with disputed cases. The chief commissioner of customs (east zone) Mr Subrata Basu told exporters at a meeting organised by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) here that there should exist mutual respect between customs officials and the exporters.

He said that export bodies should not utilise open house sessions arranged occasionally to exert pressure on the customs officials.

Saying that there was a need to create an atmosphere of trust, Mr Basu said that exporters should avoid going to appellate tribunals. He said that the customs department had also installed an electronic data interchange (EDI) terminal at Haldia for better trade facilitation.

DEPB issue
The recent reduction in DEPB rate is going to further squeeze the margins of exporters who are already hard pressed to compete the global trade challenge.
