Five SEZs nearing completion

PTI - New Delhi

Describing special economic zones as engines of growth, the government said five out of the 23 recently approved SEZs were nearing completion.

The SEZs of Jaipur, Jodhpur, Moradabad, Mumbai and Indore were on the verge of completion while significant progress had been made on other projects, the additional secretary (commerce) Mr Vinay Bansal said inaugurating the second World Free Trade Zone expo here. He said four states have got their independent legislations on SEZs while two more states were working on it. Out of the 8.8 per cent export growth registered during April-November 2003, SEZs contributed a whopping 40 per cent, Mr Bansal said. The expo is expected to draw 250 international visiting delegates from various countries, representing free zones, international governing and finance institutions, government bodies and business consultants.

DEPB issue
The recent reduction in DEPB rate is going to further squeeze the margins of exporters who are already hard pressed to compete the global trade challenge.
