‘A steadily rising rupee is hurting our competitiveness’

Premal Udani, managing director, Kaytee Corporation
Kaytee Corporation is in the process of setting up facilities at Netaji Apparel Park in Tirupur. With this we will double the existing capacity. This, and compliance are the two things that we are constantly working towards, as economies of scale and compliance to social and quality standards are becoming very important. I do not see much future for the textile and clothing sectors in Mumbai and Maharashtra today, which does not have the textile infrastructure like Tirupur, moreover labour here is still more militant than in other garmenting centres.

The government still has a role to play in helping the industry achieve competitiveness. The steadily strengthening rupee is eroding the competitive edge of the Indian exporters. The government has acknowledged that the rising rupee is a cause for concern, and the exporting community had expected some measures in the mini-budgets. This did not happen. While the government cannot do much now, due to the elections, there’s nothing stopping the RBI from intervening.

It is imperative that India holds on to its global market share, but with this situation, things are getting difficult for the industry. Moreover, this affects not just our exports, but the domestic market too, as imports become cheaper.
