We find it advantageous to source fabric requirements from China

Post 2004, opportunities for the Indian textile and clothing industry will be
immense. Shilpa Creations is developing the US market, which is not a difficult
market if one has the volumes. We are planning a state-of-the-art facility at
the Navi Mumbai Special Economic Zone, which will have a capacity of almost
75,000-100,000 pieces per month. This will be in addition to our existing capacity
of 35,000 pieces per month. The new plant will be a joint venture with a US-based
firm. One of the major problems that garment exporters face is that of raw material
availability. The Indian mills are not always in a position to supply the fabrics
at the right time, price, quality, and quantity. To overcome this problem, we
have sourced, on an experimental basis, fabric from China, and find it to be
quite advantageous in terms of logistics. We can get the desired fabric from
China in just 35-40 days, as against 90 days from the Indian mills. Moreover,
Chinese fabric has wider width of 58 as against Indian fabrics of 44;
this means less wastages, lower costs, better automation. We have set out four
garment consignments using Chinese fabric, which has been very well accepted
by our buyers. With pressure on exporters to work on ever reducing lead times,
costs while delivering the best qualities, sourcing raw materials from China,
and other countries is an option that garmenters are looking at seriously.
