Indian garment makers bag export orders worth Rs 600 crore

Agencies - New Delhi

Indian garment exporters have bagged orders worth Rs 600 crore from US clients during the trade shows held at Dallas and New York, USA, recently.

The two-day show, organised by the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), generated on the spot business deals worth Rs 100 crore and another Rs 500 crore as business in pipeline, an AEPC release said here.

Over 68 exporters from across India took part in the exhibition which attracted more than 250 buyers including big companies such as Tommy Hilfiger, Federated Stores and Perry Ellis.

According to the AEPC chairman, Mr A Sakthivel, “Serious and big buyers were ‘satisfied’ with policies being adopted by the Indian apparel manufacturers in terms of compliance, quality and price, but made some observations on government policies.”

The buyers had a note of caution on issues like “age old labour policies, which resulted in lower productivity and high cost, inadequate port facilities leading to logistical disadvantage, delay at Indian customs for imports of exportable manufacturing, and laws, which did not encourage raising social standards issue,” Mr Sakthivel claimed. The general perception of the buyers was that India stands to gain tremendously, if these anomalies were rectified by the government at the earliest, he added.

Cotton and its blends
According to a recent survey, cotton fabric has maintained its favourable slot among the fashion apparel buyers. The survey has re-affirmed that cotton continues to reign as compared to other fabrics when basic attributes are concerned.
