Responsible Care recognizes US chemical industry’s leaders

PRNewswire

The American Chemistry Council presented its Responsible Care Sustained Excellence Award and Responsible Care Leadership Awards, recognizing four companies for outstanding achievement under the chemical industry’s environmental, health, safety and security performance initiative.

Representatives from each of the award-winning companies were honored before an audience of the industry’s top executives at ACC’s annual membership meeting. “Today’s award recipients have demonstrated exceptional leadership, commitment and performance,” said ACC President and CEO, Mr Tom Reilly. “Their accomplishments underscore the importance of environmental, health, safety and security performance to who we are as an industry, and remind us of the significant progress we have made over the last sixteen years.”

The Responsible Care Leadership Award recognizes companies that demonstrate outstanding leadership in key aspects of responsible care. Leadership may be relevant to promoting the responsible care ethic through communications and outreach, product stewardship, sustainability and continuous improvement processes, and management system implementation and certification. To be considered for this award, companies must meet defined safety performance requirements, demonstrate a positive trend in performance metrics, and complete security requirements on time. Leadership awards are presented to small, medium and large companies by size category.

Small Company Category (up to 2 million work hours)

ACC selected two winners in this category, Milliken Chemical, a division of Milliken & Company and Wacker Chemical Corporation. This is the second time Spartanburg-based Milliken Chemical has been recognized by Responsible Care, having won the Responsible Care Sustained Excellence Award in 2001.

Through the Responsible Care initiative, the chemical industry has reduced environmental emissions by 70 per cent and achieved a worker safety record that is four times better than the average of the US manufacturing sector. Reilly noted that, “The chemical industry is continually challenge itself to pursue even higher standards of performance.”

“Receiving this award is truly an extraordinary accomplishment for Milliken & Company,” said Dr John Rekers, president of Milliken’s chemical division. “All Milliken associates can share in this recognition for our efforts to be good stewards of the environment, our workplace and our products. Responsible Care is not merely a guideline for our company and our industry, it is an integral part of the values we live by every day.”

In recent years, Responsible Care companies have expanded significantly the scope and specificity of program requirements, which now include leading practices in safety, security, environmental protection, product stewardship, community outreach, management systems verification and public performance reporting. Rohm and Haas was the award recipient in the medium category. Dow Chemical was the winner in the large company category Milliken Chemical, a Division of Milliken & Company produces a variety of chemical products, colorants, and additives used in textile, plastics, and other industries. The American Chemistry Council (ACC) represents the leading companies engaged in the business of chemistry. ACC members apply the science of chemistry to make innovative products and services that make people’s lives better, healthier and safer. ACC is committed to improved environmental, health and safety performance through Responsible Care, common sense advocacy designed to address major public policy issues and health and environmental research and product testing.

The business of chemistry is a $460 billion enterprise and a key element of the nation’s economy. It is the nation’s largest exporter, accounting for ten cents out of every dollar in US exports. Chemistry companies invest more in research and development than any other business sector.
