TAI seminar on ‘Texturising Excellence’

E-Tex Staff, Mumbai

The Textile Association (India), Mumbai unit, recently organised a seminar on ‘Texturising Excellence’ in Daman.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr C Bose, vice president, TAI, Mumbai unit said that the texturising industry was growing faster in Asia and more particularly in India and China. "The quantitative growth will be meaningful if the qualitative growth also takes place simultaneously," he said.

Mr D R Mehta, in his presidential address said that the polyester texturising industry in India has recorded a massive growth from 10,000 tpa in 1980 to 1.2 million tpa today, and is expected to go up to 1.5 million tpa by 2006.

"The major reasons for this phenomenal growth could be the inadequacy of natural fibres like cotton to cater to he increasing demand for textiles, and polyester achieving the status of a common man’s fabric because of its perfection and price advantage. The growth prospects for texturising are immense due to the diversified range of applications. Its applications in furnishing fabrics is increasing as also in technical textiles." He further stated that the texturising industry was getting concentrated in the western region and particularly in Silvassa, Daman and Surat. "There is a locational advantage here as both Maharashtra and Gujarat are the major manufacturers of textiles, fashion garments and also major exporters of textiles and clothing."

Mr J K Dadoo, commissioner and secretary (finance), UT of Daman-Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, who was the chief guest on the occasion said that the power problems in Daman would be solved shortly and invited the industry to invest in software technology, as a software technology park was in the process of being set up in Daman.

The seminar attracted over 300 participants from all over the country. Papers were presented on topics such as:

- Faults remedies on texturising
- Thermo stable and bio-degradable fibre preparation
