SASMA moots quick implementation of ECTT report

E-Tex Staff - Mumbai

The Synthetic and Art Silk Mills Association (SASMA) has appealed to the government to undertake the implementation of the recommendations of the Expert Committee on Technical Textiles (ECTT) without any dilution or delay. “The ECTT has already finalised its report, which has been submitted to the government. The government should begin implementation of the report without any delays if India is to become a leading player in this sector,” said Mr V S Chalke, chairman, SASMA. Mr Chalke was speaking at the 65th annual general meeting of the association, held recently in Mumbai.

While welcoming the CENVAT option, he stated that there is need for rationalisation of excise duty on manmade filament yarns. “We have been asking the government to bring down excise duty on fibres and yarns to a uniform rate of eight per cent. At present, PFY, the largest produced yarn in the country, attracts the highest excise duty of 24 per cent, even as 80 per cent of the PFY fabric production is consumed by the economically weaker section of society. Fabric price should not be dictated by means of differential excise duty but should be left to the consumer preferences.”

He also suggested bringing down customs duty on manmade fibres and filament yarns.

Edit
DEPB debacle
The sharp reduction in DEPB rates on textiles has created a significant doubt in industry’s mind about government’s policy intention to help it prepare for the global challenges in the post-MFA regime.
Home textiles: A key driver for textile exports

After more than 40 years of import quotas, the textile and clothing sector will become subject to the general rules of General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) from January 1, 2005.
