FTA with India a matter of time: Bangladesh

Bangladesh said it was only a matter of time before Dhaka and New Delhi entered into a free trade agreement to enhance bilateral trade. “FTA between the two countries is inevitable and only a matter of time; both countries stand to benefit immensely by signing the agreement,” the Bangladesh commerce minister Mr Altaf Hossain Choudhury said.

He said talks in this regard were going on though there was a need to upgrade the existing infrastructure at the border for enhancing trade. He said talks were also in progress for concluding the South Asia Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) and other multilateral treaties and that a bilateral agreement between the two Asian neighbours will not be far away.

The minister said Bangladesh was studying the details of India’s bilateral free trade agreements with other countries. Mr Choudhury, a former home minister, said in the interregnum, New Delhi should extend some concessions to products from Bangladesh exported to India as a goodwill gesture.

Strategy for jute
The recent approval by the Planning Commission to set up a jute technology mission on the lines of the cotton technology mission, though late, but an apt move. The effort once implemented will go a long way in rejuvenating the jute sector which has so far been not successful in drawing the attention of policy makers.
