EU, China agree on textile caps

The EU and China have agreed to limits on Chinese textile exports. The deal allows for gradually rising caps on allowed increases in Chinese textile exports to Europe over the next three years, with all limits to be done away with in 2008. China has yet to work out an agreement with the US, which has already announced a 7.5 per cent cap on the increase in Chinese textile exports this year.


Multiplicity of trade unions affecting jute industry: IJMA

IJMA has sought cooperation of the West Bengal government for granting recognition to one trade union as sole bargaining agent as per trade unions (WB Amendment) Act. According to IJMA, this would do away with the problems created by the plethora of trade unions existing in the jute sector of the state, such as inter and intra-union rivalries, frequent strikes and go-slow, etc. There were about 20 trade unions affiliated to various central organisations and political parties, with at least 10 to 12 unions existing in each mill, the IJMA said in a report.


India, MERCOSUR FTA to be operational soon

Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and MERCOSUR, involving four Latin American countries of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, is likely to become effective by the end of this month, Mr Sunil Kumar, associate director, Ernst & Young, said. He said about 320 items were expected be brought under the FTA list between India and MERCOSUR.


Enthusing response to Indian apparel manufacturers at New York

As part of the export promotion initiatives, Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) successfully organised its second edition of Sourcing Expo of Indian Apparel at the fashion den of New York. The Sourcing Expo was attended by 350 strong senior representatives from 250 buying organisations.

The major ones who turned up for the show were Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Cole Haan, Ecko, Wet Seal, Arden B, Macy's, Gap, NY3 International, Dan River, Erika and many more. The buyers represented stores, catalogue, importers and big whole sellers.
