Creating wealth from the sand

The year was 1946. The Maharaja of Travancore initiated an enterprise that would eventually become the pride of his country. A project to convert the gifts of nature into wealth. Wealth that would be utilized for the common good of the people. An enterprise that would provide hundreds of people with means of livelihood and one day earn valuable foreign exchange for the country.

Travancore Titanium Products Limited was incorporated to manufacture Titanium Dioxide pigment from Ilmenite, a mineral abundantly available in the beach sands of South Kerala. In collaboration with British Titan Products Limited (now known as Huntsman Tioxide), Travancore Titanium Products Limited started production in 1951. Today it is the leading manufacturer of the magic white pigment in the country producing nearly 60 tonnes per day.

The Wonder Chemical

Titanium Dioxide is a white pigment the properties of which are superior to any other white pigment developed so far. It's properties like high reflectance, high refractive index, optimum particle size distribution, stable dispersion, excellent whiteness, high tinting strength and hiding power make it a crucial ingredient that goes into the manufacture of nearly all products we use in our daily life. Paint, rubber, textiles, plastic, cosmetics, paper, synthetic fibres, ceramics, printing inks are some of the major industries that make use of Titanium Dioxide.

Titanium Dioxide is a white pigment with a wide range of industrial applications. Some of the properties of Titanium Dioxide include, Broad usage by virtue of its Chemical (acid, alkali) and Physical (light, heat) stability, High reflectance, High refractive index, Optimum particle size distribution and stable dispersion, Excellent Whiteness and high Tinting strength & hiding power. Application of this includes on all types of white and pastel shades of paints, white-walled tyres and car tyres, glazed paper, plastics, printed fabrics, soaps and face powders, flooring materials like Linoleum & white mosaics, Pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, electronics components, materials for interior decoration, foot-wear and leather goods, dyes and printing inks.
