Creating wealth from the sand
The year was 1946. The Maharaja of Travancore initiated an
enterprise that would eventually become the pride of his country. A project
to convert the gifts of nature into wealth. Wealth that would be utilized for
the common good of the people. An enterprise that would provide hundreds of
people with means of livelihood and one day earn valuable foreign exchange for
the country.
Travancore Titanium Products Limited was incorporated to manufacture Titanium
Dioxide pigment from Ilmenite, a mineral abundantly available in the beach sands
of South Kerala. In collaboration with British Titan Products Limited (now known
as Huntsman Tioxide), Travancore Titanium Products Limited started production
in 1951. Today it is the leading manufacturer of the magic white pigment in
the country producing nearly 60 tonnes per day.
The Wonder Chemical
Titanium Dioxide is a white pigment the properties of which are superior to
any other white pigment developed so far. It's properties like high reflectance,
high refractive index, optimum particle size distribution, stable dispersion,
excellent whiteness, high tinting strength and hiding power make it a crucial
ingredient that goes into the manufacture of nearly all products we use in our
daily life. Paint, rubber, textiles, plastic, cosmetics, paper, synthetic fibres,
ceramics, printing inks are some of the major industries that make use of Titanium
Dioxide.
Titanium Dioxide is a white pigment with a wide range of industrial applications.
Some of the properties of Titanium Dioxide include, Broad usage by virtue of
its Chemical (acid, alkali) and Physical (light, heat) stability, High reflectance,
High refractive index, Optimum particle size distribution and stable dispersion,
Excellent Whiteness and high Tinting strength & hiding power. Application
of this includes on all types of white and pastel shades of paints, white-walled
tyres and car tyres, glazed paper, plastics, printed fabrics, soaps and face
powders, flooring materials like Linoleum & white mosaics, Pharmaceutical
and cosmetic products, electronics components, materials for interior decoration,
